  1. Founded in 1822 by U.S. black freedmen who settled in Monrovia,
  2. it became a republic on July 26, 1847 with a constitution modeled
  3. on that of the United States.  Charging rampant corruption an
  4. Army Redemption Council of enlisted men staged a coup on April
  5. 12, 1980 in which President Tolbert was killed and replaced as
  6. Head of State by Sgt. Samuel Doe.  Doe was chosen President in a
  7. disputed election and survived a subsequent coup in 1985.
